Signs of a Leaking Roof

Most homeowners think they’ll know their roof is leaking when they have to put a bucket in the middle of the living room.

But by the time the water is dripping from one of your light fixtures, the damage is likely months, or even years old.

Water can be a patient invader. It finds the smallest gap in flashing or the tiniest crack in a shingle and slowly compromises your home’s skeletal structure.

At FMF Roofing, we’ve seen how these leaks can lead to costly mold and wood rot. Here’s how you can spot the signs of a failing roof before the next big storm arrives.

Is a “coffee stain” a sign of a leaking roof?

A faint, brownish ring on the ceiling or upper walls is one of the most common early indicators of a roof leak. It usually looks like a coffee or tea stain.

While many homeowners are tempted to just paint over them, these spots indicate that water has bypassed your shingles, soaked through your attic insulation. It’s now sitting on the backside of your drywall.

If the spot feels damp or soft to the touch, the leak is active. If the spot grows after every rainstorm, you have a breach that needs immediate professional attention before the ceiling material becomes heavy enough to collapse.

How can you check your attic for leaks?

There are several ways to check your attic for leaks. If you suspect one:

  • Look for dark streaks on the rafters.
  • Check your insulation: if it’s wet, you probably have a leak.
  • The old basement smell in the attic usually indicates mold or mildew, which can only thrive in the presence of moisture.

What will your shingles look like if you have a roof leak?

A basic visual exterior inspection will usually show you moss growth. Moss may look charming, but it acts like a sponge, holding moisture against the shingle and eventually lifting it, which lets water to seep underneath.

You should also look for bald spots on your shingles where the protective granules have washed away. If you see them, the shingle has reached the end of its life and is no longer watertight.

What happens to your energy bill when your roof starts leaking?

Sometimes the signs of a roof leak aren’t visual.

They’re financial.

If your heating and cooling bills have taken an unexplained jump, wet insulation could be the culprit.

When attic insulation gets wet from a roof leak, it loses its ability to regulate temperature. Your HVAC system has to work twice as hard to keep up, leading to higher costs.

Is it time to call in a professional?

Identifying the signs of the roof leak is only half the battle.

Finding the source is where the real work begins.

Water rarely enters the roof directly above where the stain appears on the ceiling. It often travels feet or yards along the beam first.

Because our owner, Daniel, is on site for every project, FMF Roofing provides a level of diagnostic expertise that high-volume companies often miss. We don’t just patch the spot. We identify the root cause of the intrusion to ensure your home stays dry for another twenty years.

If you’ve spotted any of these red flags, don’t wait for the downpour. Reach out for a professional inspection today.
